It’s that time of the year again when I hear everybody saying that next year they are going to get a new job, go on that vacation they have been talking about, lose 20 pounds, etc. It happens every year and in most cases most of these goals will be the exact same ones the same people are talking about this time next year. Life is too short to keep making empty promises to yourself.
So here is my challenge to you. What are you doing right now to make sure that you aren’t having this same conversation with yourself next year? If you want a new job next year, you should have been working to get one this year. If you want to take that vacation you’ve been talking about, then you should have been planning it already. We can’t go back in time. And we can’t predict the future. We can, however, accomplish our goals if we plan accordingly.
I was asked an interesting question a while back. What would you love to do? I didn’t exactly know what I would LOVE to do, but I knew I didn’t love what I was doing at the moment. The gentlemen then made a statement that I continue to think about. He said, “Well, life is pretty short to not be doing what you love.” I couldn’t agree more with that statement. When I was in retail automotive I used to tell customers that you’re dead for a long time. I guess that was a much more crass way of saying the same thing.
As this year comes to an end and you start thinking about what you are going to change or do next year, start with how are you going to accomplish your goal. We all need goals to make ourselves better, but we also need realistic goals that we can achieve. And without an action plan of how we are going to get to that goal, it will just be another dream that never sees reality.
I hope that you achieve whatever goals you set for yourself next year. Even more, I hope that you actually put a plan in place so that you can achieve your goals. Life really is too short to not be doing something you love. I personally am looking forward to a new year. I have set my goals and have planned on how to achieve them. And I am definitely taking that vacation I keep talking about. Disneyland, here I come! That’s definitely something I love.
As always, thank you for taking the time to read my blog. I hope that it continues to help and I do appreciate the feedback I have received. I hope everybody has a wonderful holiday season. Thank you all!
